THE United Nations World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO) is running a World Tourism Day photo competition open to all citizens of the world.

World Tourism Day this year falls on the 27th of September every year and this year it runs under the theme, "Tourism: Responding to the Challenge of Climate Change." The host country is Peru.

Organisers of the competition said they are looking for photographs that showcase Climate Solutions in tourism. "Examples include good practices that reflect how we adjust to protecting our planet from climate change and how we can alleviate its effects on the environment," the organisers said in a statement posted on their website. Tourism has grown to be a leading economic player in Zimbabwe over the years. With the country suffering under western sanctions and image bashing by the western media, it has turned to the Middle East, the East and Africa.

To enter the competitions prospective participants must register and submit photographs electronically at the organisation's website, www.unwto.org/wtd. "The competition is open to people of all ages, from all around the world," the organisers said.
The organisers said the photos can be in color or in black and white and must be submitted from the web site after registration.
"Up to 5 photos may be submitted by each individual participant. Photos must be the individual work of the named participant and must not have been previously published,' the statement said.

The organisers said the photos must be submitted electronically in high-resolution jpeg format (72 pixels) at the organisation's website.
"The preferred size is height 405 X width 540 pixels," the organisers said. They said all photos should be accompanied by a short description; no more than 25 words explaining how the picture showcases Climate Solutions in tourism. The deadline for receipt of entries is 30 November 2008 and the winners will be notified before 30 December 2008. Pursuing the climate change theme this year, the organisation is set to focus on increasing awareness of the climate issues in tourism and what role tourism can play and encouraging its implementation by all stakeholders.

"As a first step UNWTO's Assembly has made the theme of World Tourism Day 2008 'Tourism Responding to the Challenge of Climate Change,' and the organization and its members will undertake a year long campaign around this theme," the organisation said.
